Top 3 Tips for Working/Studying from Home

Desk Setups that maximize Productivity | Yanko Design

Hey guys!

With all that’s been happening in the world, many of us are finding ourselves doing work/school from home. This is new for a lot of us, but here are some tips to help you get on with it better.

  • Have a scheduled routine. Although your work/school times may be a lot more flexible now, its still important to have a good routine. OK, so you don’t have a 30 min commute any more, so there’s no need to wake up at 7am…but 8am seems doable, right? Take a shower, eat breakfast, make some coffee, maybe even sneak in a workout and be at your desk for 9, like you normally would. Or, if you would rather wake up naturally rather than with an alarm, that works too! It’s still important to set aside specific amounts of time for each thing your working on. For example, if you’re doing home-school, then you might say: 1 hour on Science, 1 hour on History, then a 1 hour break, and finally 2 hours on Math. Make sure you also set aside time for breaks, self-care, relaxation and family time. This is very important for your mind to keep functioning properly, and also to have a well-rounded day. See my previous post on managing your time well.
  • Get ready for your day. As you most likely won’t be leaving your home, it can be tempting to stay in your PJ’s the whole day. And sure, you could probably do this and still have a productive day. However, for most people, days are more productive when you actually make an effort to look and feel ready. It’s also important to do this in order to keep yourself in that work/school mindset. You wouldn’t show up at the office in your sweatpants, right? So just get ready, in your own definition, whether it means taking a shower, getting dressed, doing your hair or applying some makeup, you choose. What’s important is to feel good and productive.

  • Try to keep your routine as normal as possible. Especially during this time, things can seem incredibly out of place and abnormal, and that can be unsettling. This is why it’s important to try and keep your day as normal as possible. For example, if you would normally listen to a podcast on your way to work/school, then listen to the same podcast but while getting ready, or making breakfast. If you would normally head to the gym before work, try a virtual workout instead. If you and your friends have weekly sleepovers, try a virtual FaceTime sleepover instead! Find ways to keep social during social distancing. Stay in touch with your friends and family, ring up your grandparents and maybe drop your co-workers an email from time to time. Control what you can when things are out of control.

Yes, these times are strange and can be scary, but it’s comforting to know that we’re all in this together.

Remember, the best is yet to come.

Keep spreading the love!

Managing Your Time Well and Staying Productive

Hey friends! Welcome back to The Perfect Lifestyle.

Today we are going to be talking about how to manage your time well, getting the correct work-life balance, and making sure you stay productive and energized.

We all know that, in today’s world, us humans are generally very busy people. I personally enjoy being busy and having stuff to do as I hate not doing anything. However, it’s very important to make sure your on top of your work/school life and also have a great personal/social life as well.

I’m going to list a few things that help me to manage and use my time well, which may be of use to you guys!

  • Use a calendar or a planner. These are extremely useful in setting out your day in a productive way. I prefer to use an online/app version, since I find it easier to have it on my phone/iPad/laptop all in one place and I can look at it whenever. The simple Calendar app on iOS is what really helps me time-block efficiently. You can have different colours for the different types of events, for example school/work, personal/social, appointments, events, travel, etc. The options are endless. As a visual person, it really helps to see what I have planned for the day. If you own an android, the Google Calendar app does exactly the same thing. You can also use the paper version if you would prefer.

These really do help when it comes to setting out your day- I cannot stress this enough!
  • Create a to-do list. As I’ve mentioned, I am a visual person, so actually physically writing out my tasks for the day helps me envision a structure for my day and stay on top of things. I get a lot of satisfaction from crossing things off of my to-do list, so this really does help to keep me motivated and productive. If you find it overwhelming to do this, try and start simpler by setting out your top 3 main tasks for the day. Just 3 things that you want to get done. Slowly, you can make it 4 main tasks, then 5, then 6, and before you know it you will have all your tasks done for the day. If you ever feel overwhelmed, that’s totally fine! Take a deep breath and bring your main tasks back down to 3 or 4. Never push yourself too hard!
  • Set time for personal/social life! Don’t ever spend your whole day working or studying or doing homework, as this is simply not healthy! Always make sure you set aside some time during your day to take a break from the screen or the book. Use this time to meet up with friends, spend time with family, take your dog on a walk, etc. If you work from home, you could easily spend this time cooking, baking, reading a book or watching some TV! If you are at school/work the whole day, then make sure to at least have a coffee break every once in a while, or during your lunch break you could chat with colleagues/peers or do something rejuvenating. Make sure you don’t spend your lunch break working. Or, if you only have time at the end of your day, that’s fine as well! When you come home, try to maybe watch some TV, read a book, listen to some music or a podcast, pass time with your favourite hobbies, or take a nice, warm bath and put on a face mask. The options are endless! If you find taking time out of your day hard, then try to schedule it in advance and don’t book any meetings/work commitments at times. But remember, keep your priorities straight! Don’t put off an extremely important assignment due the next day just to watch Netflix! Finish your assignment first, and THEN you can relax. Make sure to get this work-life balance, and only then will you stay productive, energised and motivated.
